CHASS recognises the urgency of addressing antisemitism in Australia. It also sees social cohesion, in the sense of a society where different cultures, religions, and communities are able to live together with respect and harmony, as essential to Australia’s present and future. An increase in antisemitism is often an indicator of social fragmentation and democratic decay, but it also contributes to declining social cohesion and democratic resilience, and is associated with other expressions of violence, prejudice and hatred.
In this submission CHASS wishes to highlight the importance of scholars in the humanities, arts and social sciences (HASS) and their expertise in helping to understand the complex phenomena of antisemitism and social cohesion with nuance.
