CHASS Newsletter
Dear ~~first_name~~,

The Congress of HASS is over for another year and we are deeply grateful to our host, the University of Western Australia, and especially the School of Social Sciences led by Professor Amanda Davies. Our thanks also to BE Perth for its sponsorship, and to the UWA Public Policy Institute and Australian Political Studies Association for partnering with us on the very timely and engaging ‘Is Democracy Done?’ event. A video of that can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5aOBW7TJ_U

For the Congress as a whole, there were about 1500 delegates all up, with about a dozen participating organisations. Organisations such as the Australian Political Studies Association, the Australian Anthropological Society and The Australian Sociological Association held their major conferences as part of the Congress. Other bodies, such as the Australasian Society for Continental Philosophy, organised thematic seminars and conferences. As a historian, I was delighted to attend most of the Everyday Heritage and Difficult Legacies symposium, which was supported by the Australian Historical Association, along with several other organisations. That typified the way the Congress works, bringing together scholars, practitioners and partner organisations in support for the HASS enterprise. What a privilege it was for me to be able to drop in on so many events and gain a taste of the brilliant work being done in the HASS fields and disciplines.

On the Thursday night of the Congress, the Academy of the Social Sciences hosted Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley who presented the Shape the Nation Lecture 2024 on 'The secret sauce to a better Australia'. This was a marvellous discussion of the possibilities for collaboration between natural and social sciences in grappling with the biggest problems the world faces today. A report of the lecture as well as the video can be viewed at: https://socialsciences.org.au/news/australias-chief-scientist-reflects-on-social-sciences-at-the-2024-shape-the-nation-lecture/

While the Congress was a splendid showcase for HASS, many of us move into the summer break with much anxiety about the future of the arts, humanities and social sciences in Australian universities. The year ahead will call for our powers of advocacy, and CHASS will be active in this arena. I wish you all the best for the festive season, as well as for the year ahead.

Warm regards,

Frank Bongiorno AM
