CHASS Newsletter
Dear ~~first_name~~,

The Third Congress of HASS is almost upon us, and I’m looking forward to seeing many of you in Perth, 25-29 November, where the University of Western Australia is our principal host and sponsor. It’s shaping up as a great occasion for the arts, humanities and social sciences – a time for meeting, conversing, the sharing of research and ideas, and reflection on the direction of the HASS disciplines and even of our democracies.

The Congress comes at a time when our universities, in general, are under enormous financial pressure. Several of them have announced staff cuts and even the disestablishment of humanities disciplines and fields, with the University of Wollongong only the latest. My own, the Australian National University, is in the midst of such a crisis. Caps on international student numbers will affect several universities adversely. CHASS will, as usual, play its advocacy role in the difficult times ahead, as well as providing a forum for the discussion of common interests and concerns.

These are hard times for the disciplines we love, for the scholars who practise them, and for the wider world that it is our task to interpret and make a better place.

Times of war and threats to democracy are not invitations to retreat to our bunkers. A complicated world needs HASS scholars’ expertise and efforts more than ever.

See you in Perth.

Frank Bongiorno
CHASS President

Books

A new book called "International Student Visibility: Living and Participating in Community", written by Catherine Gomes, narrates the ubiquitous relationship that international students have with their destination community, asking why students are not part of these communities despite being visible actors not only as students but as neighbours and as workers in the service industries and the gig economy.
